The Journey
Crazy
The Story
Some journeys are carefully planned. Others evolve into something extraordinary. And then there's Crazy!
Over 66 consecutive days in the autumn of 2017, this remarkable odyssey covered 103,619 miles aboard 66 flights — more than four complete circumnavigations of the Earth in cumulative distance. It was an unapologetic celebration of aviation, exploration, spontaneity, and the irresistible temptation to take just one more flight.
The experiences were as varied as they were extraordinary. A second aviation tour of Belarus offered the rare opportunity to fly aboard Soviet-era Antonov An-24 and An-30 aircraft. A scenic flight around the Himalayas revealed some of the world's most dramatic landscapes from above, while a sunrise hot-air balloon ride over Kenya's Masai Mara provided an entirely different perspective on flight.
There was a UNICEF flight, an unexpected reunion with clients on safari, and a place aboard the inaugural scheduled service of Delta's Airbus A350 — another milestone in a lifelong pursuit of aviation history.
The itinerary even passed through the United States twice without bringing the journey to an end. Home, apparently, could wait.
What makes Crazy remarkable isn't simply its staggering statistics. It's the sheer diversity of experiences compressed into a single continuous journey: rare aircraft, humanitarian aviation, wildlife encounters, spectacular landscapes, and an aviation milestone, all connected by an almost relentless curiosity about the world.
Nine years later, reconstructing the journey flight by flight reveals something that wasn't necessarily apparent at the time: this wasn't merely an extended trip. It was an extraordinary collection of experiences that, for 66 days, became a way of life.
Sixty-six days. Sixty-six flights. One hundred and three thousand miles. And absolutely no compelling reason to stop.
Some people travel to reach a destination. Others discover that the journey itself is the destination.
The photographs are still to come.
